An adopted daughter of Mr. Davis, at Lafayette, Christian county, was riding on horseback along the public road. She was passing some woods, reading a book as she rode, when a negro names Willis Griffey sprang out of the woods, dragged the girl from her horse and carried her into the woods. She struggled bravely and the negro did not succeed in accomplishing his purpose. The man made his escape, and is still at large. The entire country is aroused. Griffet will be lynched if caught. He is described as being 35 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall, weight 165 pounds, has thick lips and a moustache. He is not very dark. The lynching party consisted of thirty-five or forty determined citizens, who rode from the scene fo the crime, nearly forty miles away, for their revenge. So quietly did the mob enter the town, secure their prisoner and depart with him, that the people of Princeton were not aware that a lynching had occurred, until Griffey’s body was found dangling from the limb of a tree, about a mile from the city perforated with bullet holes and otherwise mutilated. The jailer had no opportunity to resist, being surprised and overpowered and keys secured after searching the house. Griffey’s fair victim belongs to one of the wealthiest families of Christian County. She was going home from church when the black villain accosted her and accomplished his purpose. The Christian county grand jury, which is still in session, returned an indictment Saturday night against Griffey, charging him with rape. Next Monday was the day appointed for his trial. The indictment was based upon the testimony of Miss Berry, the victim of Griffey’s brutal assault. Her story was substantially the same as was reported at the time the crime was first made known to the public. Miss Merry was riding alone from her home, near Lafayette, a town in the southern portion of this county, one morning over two weeks go, when Griffey suddenly appeared before her in a lonely piece of woods and made improper proposals to her. When these were rejected, he seized and tore her from her horse and, taking her into the woods, brutally assaulted her, with threats of killing her if she ever betrayed him. Griffey then left her. She was unconscious several hours, but as soon as she was able she returned home. Noticing her condition, her family finally wrung the truth from her. A searching party was at once organized, and several days later Griffey was found near Madisonville, being brought to this city two weeks ago yesterday. He was taken on that same night to Princeton and lodged in the Caldwell county jail. Colored People Threaten to Avenge the Lynching of Griffey. PRINCETON, Ky., Oct. 23. – There is considerable excitement in South Christian, in the neighborhood of Lafayette and Pee Dee, over the efforts of certain negro leaders to work up a race riot. The animus is the hanging of Willis Griffey, who was lynched here a week ago by a mob, supposed to be from the section where the turmoil is now brewing. Griffey was a rapist from Christian county, and his victim lived in Lafayette. He was brought here for safe keeping, but a mob, after three ineffectual attempts, formed in the section where the crime was committed, came here, took the negro from jail and lynched him. Secret meetings have been held since amongst the negroes, from house to house, and they have become so bold in their utterances and threats that Rev. Garrett, a Baptist minister, proclaimed from the pulpit Sunday night that he, for one, was ready to should his musket against the enemies of the colored race; that the negroes had made the wealth for the whites, amd when they lynched one of their number the time had come for them to arise against such acts. Marshall Weaver, another leader, voiced the same sentiments. The white citizens are alarmed at this aspect of affairs and are sleeping on their arms, ready for any emergency. The LEAF-CHRONICLE contained an article Saturday about the search in this vicinity for Willis Griffey, colored, who had committed an outrage on a white girl near Lafayette. The New Era of Monday says: “Saturday morning Messrs. Wm. Braeme and W. H. Merritt, of this city arrested four miles north of Madisonville, Willis Griffey, a negro who is charged with having committed an outrage upon the person of Lena Berry, an adopted daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Davie, who live down on the Boddie farm–about three miles from Lafayette. The negro was brought to Hopkinsville at 5:18 Saturday afternoon and placed in the county jail, but as the local officers feared that an attempt wold be made to mob him, he was taken from the jail yesterday afternoon and carried over the O. V. to Princeton, where he is now in jail to await the action of the grand jury which is now in session. “The crime was committed about a week ago, but the matter had been kept as quiet as possible in order that the criminal might be more easily captured. The girl, who is eighteen years of age, is an orphan who had been adopted and raised by Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Davie, an aged couple. The negro who committed the brutal deed lived with his wife on the same farm on which the girl and her foster parents lived. Last Sunday as she was returning from church, while passing through a patch of woods, reading a book as she rode, the negro seized her, dragged her from her horse, and after carrying her into the woods, committed an outrage upon her person. “The girl says that after a severe struggle with the brute she fainted, and that she did not recover conciousness for several hours afterwards, and that as soon as she did, she informed the people at home of the negro’s deed. The negro at once left the community and was not seen again until captured near Madisonville, where he had gone to work on a farm. “The negro, as a matter of course, denies his guilt, yet, strange to say, he knew as soon as he saw Merritt and Braeme what they wanted with him. For several days search was made in the Lafayette neighborhood for him, but it was found that he had taken his departure. It was known that he had relatives near Madisonville, so Merritt and Braeme went down there Friday night and had no difficulty in locating him. They waited until dinner time and then went to the house where he was staying and captured him. The arrest was made without any difficulty, on resistance being offered. “All of the facts in the case will not be known until the girl appears before the grand jury. His body was then riddled with bullets.  The Christian County Grand Jury, which is now in session in this city, returned an indictment Saturday night against Griffey, charging him with rape, and when court opened this morning his case was set for trial next Monday. One weak later he was captured near Madisonville, and then the story came out. He acknowledged his guilt, but through fear of mob violence, he was transferred from Hopkinsville jail to Princeton.
