SUSPECTED POLICEMAN AND HIS ACCOMPLICE ARE AT HICKMAN. Fulton, Ky., Feb. 19. - The examining trials of R. M. Potts and Hardee Beasley will probably take place the latter part of the week at Hickman, Ky. They were arrested as suspects for the murder of Bill Dooley, who was foully assassinated Friday night.</h4> Potts was suspended Saturday night from the police force, pending an investigation, and the above is the outcome. At about the same time that Potts was arrested, by Roberson, Sheriff George L. Carpenter placed Beasley under arrest on a warrant charging him also with being one of the parties who killed Dooley. Both Potts and Beasley protest their innocence, and declare they know nothing whatever about the terrible deed. The men were taken to Hickman for an examining trial before County Judge Kearby. Potts and Hardee Beasley were arrested this morning charged with killing Bill Dooley, the negro who was taken from his house by four men Friday night and assassinated. Other arrests may follow. The town is quiet, but the good people of both colors are indignant at the cruel murder of Dooley. The entire city is very much aroused over the foul crime. One prominent minister touched on the matter in his sermon, declaring it to be the duty of every citizen of the city to stand ready to aid in every way possible in bringing about the arrest and conviction of the guilty parties. Potts is said to have quarreled with Dooley and to have threatened his life a few hours before the shooting. Fulton Council Offers Reward of $200 For the Conviction of the Guilty Persons.</h4> Fulton, Ky., Feb. 15. - [Special.] - Bill Dooley, a harmless negro, was dragged from his house last night by three men and shot. The murder took place at 11 o’clock. Special Officer Potts had visited Dooley’s house about 7 o’clock last night in search of a negro named Moore, who had a fight with Potts early in the evening. Potts asked Dooley if he knew where Moore was. Dooley replied that he did not. Potts then cursed and abused Dooley and Dooley finally told Potts he was going to report him to the Mayor for abusing him. Potts then struck Dooley and told him if he would come out in the yard he would kill him. Potts then went back to town. The City Council met to-night and offered $200 for the arrest and conviction of the guilty persons. Potts has been suspended from the police force pending an investigation. WHITES READY FOR OUTBREAK More Details of the Mobbing, But No Proof That the Victim Committed a Crime. Fulton, Ky., Feb. 15. - There is great excitement here tonight and it is feared that a race war is imminent as a result of the lynching of Bill Dooley last night. Later details of the killing of Dooley show that several men, instead of three, as at first reported, participated in the lynching.  The men went to the cabin where Dooley resided with his wife and children, dragged him from his bed, bound him to a tree and fired several bullets into his body. It is not known why he was killed. Some days since, a negro named Johnson shot Night Watchman Grady, of the I. C., and badly wounded him, making his escape. It is believed the mob mistook Dooley for Johnson. The negro population is up in arms over the lynching. Trouble began brewing today, and tonight the situation became serious. There are several hundred negroes here, and trouble is feared. Good citizens here condemn the lynching, but any outbreak by the negroes would be met by a solid front of the whites. M. POTTS HELD FOR TRAIL BOND FIXED AT $5,000 The examining trial of W. M. Potts, charged with killing Bill Dooley, a negro, at Fulton, last week, was held before Judge Kearby, Tuesday and Wednesday last and resulted in Potts being help for trial by the Circuit Court. His bail was fixed at $5,000. In this case, some persons took the negro, Bill Dooley, from his home, at night and killed him. Dooley is said to have been a peaceable, inoffensive man, and against whom there was no charge. Potts is a policeman in Fulton and on the night of the killing at an early hour, he with a posse visited the Dooley house, in quest of a negro offender, and they had some words with Dooley. This much is admitted by the defense. Later the same night a squad took Dooley from his home and shot him to death. The prosecution proved by four witnesses, colored, that Potts was in this last squad and participated in the killing and by one witness that he saw Potts fire the fatal shot. The defense proved by witnesses white, an alibi, that at the time the killing occurred, Potts was elsewhere in the city of Fulton, and hence could not have done the shooting or been present at the time, the shooting occurred. County Attorney Henry Remley conducted the prosecution with ability, and the prisoner was ably defended by Mr. B. T. Davis and Mr. F. S. Moore. Mr. James Roney Assisted County Attorney Remley, and in making this his first speech as an Attorney won the highest compliments from court, bar and citizens. POTTS WRITES A LETTER. Mr. Potts, the accused, has written a letter to the Paducah News Democrat.  In his letter Potts says: “I want you to publish this letter and ask every minister of Fulton to pray for me. “I will have my examining trial Tuesday, I want to ask you again to say to the Christians of FUlton to ask God to find the guilty. “My home and wife and children are laden with sorrow. In conclusion, I will say, may God speed the time when the guilty may be run down before it is too late. “My cell is so dark I am writing by candle light, and it is 10 o’clock in the morning. I have a good jailer and get plenty to eat. If anybody can say anything that will throw light upon the guilty, say it now. Yours respectfully. R. M. Title A name given to the resource Walker, Lexington Herald-Leader, October 13, 1908 Subject The topic of the resource Walker, David Mob, 50 members Charge, insulting white woman Mob, shooting Mob, burning Description An account of the resource <h3>Full Text</h3> of Governor’s Reward Offer Denounces Massacre of Negro Family and Calls Upon People to Wipe Out Kentucky’s Awful Disgrace Following is the full text of Governor Willson’s vigorous proclamation offering a reward of $500 for the conviction of anyone of the men engaged in the massacre of the family of David Walker, a Negro, at Hickman: Offer of Reward The Governor of Kentucky hereby offers a reward of five hundred dollars ($500) for the apprehension and conviction of any person and each person of the band of some fifty men who handed together and went at midnight to the little cabin home of David Walker, set fire to the cabin, and when he threw open the door pleading for mercy, he was shot to death, falling screaming to the ground; then his wife, trying to escape from the burning cabin, fled to the door holding her baby to her breast and begged the night riders for mercy, but the brutal, cowardly fiends murdered the little baby in its mother’s arms, and she fell fatally wounded with the dead baby baby clasped in her arms. Then a little girl only 5 years old was murdered while trying to escape through the door, and three other children were shot and seriously wounded. If two or three men had gone to this poor cabin and murdered the family the crime would have shocked humanity with its revelation of the incredibly wickedness, brutality and dastardly cowardice of the three men. That a larger number, some fifty men, joined in such a crime, multiplies the cowardliness and wickedness fifty fold, and makes every member of the band guilty of murder in the first degree, of the basest, wickedest, the most cowardly and inhuman murder conceived to mortal mind. This crime and the stain on Kentucky of the murder of four helpless prisoners at Russellville, both by bands of night riders, the outgrowth and logical result of the toleration of night-rider crimes in large districts of the State, is only one remove from civil war, and the very safety of our institutions and what we have of civilization is involved, and the only salvation for the name, honor and character of Kentucky is for the whole people to rise up in their might to save their liberty, uphold their law and mercilessly put down murder, arson, intimidation and proscription wherever they dare to show themselves.  The governor does not appeal to the people, but calls upon them to assemble in their respective neighborhoods and counties, organize and take stern, prompt and effective measures to punish every cowardly scoundrel that rides the roads to threaten his neighbors, to put an immediate end to lynching, murder and arson, and calls on the local authorities in each county to be earnest and vigilant, and offers to them the whole power of the State, or so much as each shall need, for the instant arrest and punishment of all who are guilty of these crimes, and to do everything possible to clear the name and honor of Kentucky of the shame and disgrace of such crimes. Saturday night two discharged negro soldiers held up two negroes several miles west of here while they were waiting for a train and robbed them of $52, telling them it was no use to call the Sheriff, as they belonged to Uncle Sam and no officer could bother them. </div> <div dir="auto"></div> <div dir="auto">At 11 o’clock last night everything was apparently quite [sic] and it was thought the trouble had blown over. Shortly after midnight Jailer Charles Murchison telephoned Sheriff Swayne Walker that crowds were collecting around the jail. He asked instructions. Sheriff Walker immediately got in touch with Circuit Judge Bunk Gardner and requested his advice. Sheriff Walker hurried to the jail, where he pleaded with the mob of between seventy-five and eighty men. He was covered with a gun. The mob then told him they were going to have Lewis. Walker had to stand by and see them hammer down the iron doors and beat off the locks with sledges. </div> <div dir="auto"></div> <div dir="auto">Jailer Murchison was unable to hold back the surging crowd, but fled with the keys, refusing to turn them over to the mob. </div> <div dir="auto"></div> <div dir="auto">The mob went through his quarters, battering open the lower iron doors, proceeded upstairs and broke another iron door open and then broke into the cells, beating the heavy iron doors off the hinges and piling them on the floor. </div> <div dir="auto"></div> <div dir="auto">Sheriff Walker followed the mob to the tree across the railroad, still begging them not to proceed.
