Title A name given to the resource Wilson, Louisville Courier-Journal, October 11, 1873 Subject The topic of the resource Wilson, Lewis Description An account of the resource <h3>The Latest Outrage</h3> <div dir="auto"></div> <div dir="auto">The Kuklux of Owen, frightened from their native haunts by the recent vigorous prosecution of their gang in that county, seem to have betaken themselves to Franklin, where one of their cowardly exploits was perpetrated the other night. The full details, taken from the Frankfort Yeomen, are published elsewhere. A band of eighteen or twenty disguised ruffians broke into the house of a Mrs. Buntyn, in that county, with the avowed intention of “running off or killing” a young negro man employed by that lady. “The only persons in the house were Mrs. Buntyn’s daughter, a young girl of fourteen or fifteen, with her cousins, Miss Littlepage and Mr. Robert Coleman. The inmates were, of course, all asleep at the house named, and, when they awoke, in consequence of the noise made by the outlaws, they were ordered not to arise, but to lie still on pain of death.” Disappointed in not finding the object of their search, the assailants “went prying about the rooms of the house, pushing their guns under the beds occupied by the inmates in their respective apartments, and using the most diabolical and insulting language toward Mrs. Buntyn and her family.” They finally left with the threat that if the negro was allowed to come back to the place “they would return and burn down the house and kill the negro and the whole family.” The daughter recognized four or five of the scoundrels, and with her mother made the proper affidavits before the county attorney. It has been since stated that “subsequently the widow Buntyn appeared with a sister of one of the accused, and begged to have the warrants dismissed on the grounds that she would be burned out if the case went to trial.” But the attorney, Mr. Ira Julian, issued writs for the arrest of the parties accused, and proposes to prosecute them, if captured, to the full extent of the law. We trust Mr. Julian will make good his word. The arrest of the five murderers of Lewis Wilson has had the effect of putting an end, we hope and believe a final end, to the Kuklux outrages in Owen county. The arrest, conviction and severe punishment of the young ruffians engaged in this cowardly attack upon the house of a defenseless widow will put a very effectual stop to the Kuklux outrages which have for three years disgraced the county of Franklin. The local authorities of the county are no less on trial in this business than the criminals will be themselves, when captured. The operations of the law in Franklin county may now be excellently vindicated from the stigma of past remissness. We trust Mr. Julian is the man for the occasion.
