They carried the negro to the spot where the attempt was made to commit the crime, about 20 miles from Franklin, and hung him to a tree immediately on the side of the road. The coroner was notified to day at 1 p. m., and with a jury went to the scene of the tragedy. The body was cut down and the jury returned a verdict of death from the bands of an unknown mob. The negro was hung with a small rope, and the hangman’s knot was tied as if done by an expert. His feet almost touched the ground while suspended from the tree. He was about 18 years old and had a fair character in the neighborhood. Charge, arson Mob, hanging Mob, masked Description An account of the resource <h3>Lynched for Arson</h3> Franklin, Ky., May 29. – Jerry Taylor and Wes. Hicks paid the penalty of death last night for burning the dwelling-house and barn of Jas. Wheeler, in this county, several weeks ago. About two weeks since Taylor was suspected of knowing something concerning the awful deed, and, in order to induce him to freely unbosom himself, he was waited upon by a party of indignant citizens, a rope placed around his neck, and made to talk. He related every little circumstance connected with the burnings, and made it so clear that even the most incredulous admitted that he and Hicks were guilty. He was then placed in jail with his pal, Wes. Hicks, to await the final trail at the next term of the Circuit Court. It recently reached the ears of some of the citizens in Wheeler’s vicinity that Taylor intended denying all that he had previously stated when he was again placed on the witness stand. This of course, enraged the citizens, hence the mob. The masked men quietly rode into town about 12 o’clock last night, and halted at the jail, demanded of Jailor Blewett that he open the cell-doors of the two men. Blewett refused, but was promptly covered with a number of revolvers and made to unlock the jail. Several men entered and ordered Hicks’ hands tied behind him, adding that should he resist in the least he should be shot down on the spot. Hicks prayed, and at first protested his innocence, but before leaving the jail acknowledged that he had burned the barn. Taylor stepped out with a smile on his face, but did not utter a word. He was perfectly cool and made no complaint. The mob left town quietly, going in the direction of the Tennessee line. This morning the two incendiaries were found swinging to different limbs, about two hundred yards across the Kentucky line, near Mitchellville Station, Tenn. The limb on which Taylor was swinging was so low that his feet would have touched the ground had they not been tied with a bridle-rein. Great excitement prevails here, and hundreds of people are leaving town to visit the scene. Simpson county has needed a first-class hanging for some time, but our good citizens regret that it was not done by the due process of law. Hicks and Taylor were bad men, and doubtless deserved the severe penalty. It occurred on the edge of Simpson County last night.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On Friday evening, as Tina Ruley, a bright and handsome young lady, aged about fifteen, but fully developed, was returning from school, she was set upon by a burly negro and thrown to the ground. He attempted to accomplish his most hellish purpose, but was frightened off by the loud and continued screaming of his unfortunate victim.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Miss Ruley, as soon as she was able, went to her aunt’s near by, when the alarm was given. She knew and described the fiend, and at once the neighborhood, infuriated and excited, arrested Bob Sarvers, who was forthwith brought into the presence of the young lady. Her aunt, Mrs. Walters, fearing an execution then and there, persuaded the girl not to identify him, when Sarvers was released. This done, the girl at once said: “That negro, Sarvers is the man.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the mean time Sarver had fled. Pursuit was begun, and he was traced to Warren County, where he was arrested on Sunday. That night he was taken to Franklin and lodged in jail. Monday the whole country was in a state of ferment, the negro having confessed the whole thing. The authorities, fearing a mob, the culprit was placed in charge of Deputy Sheriff Robert Nerly and guard to take to Bowling Green for safe-keeping. The train reached Franklin, north-bound, about eight o’clock, and Sarver, with his guards, took passage.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As the train was about to move out the engineer was approached by two men, revolvers in hand, and ordered to extinguish his lights, and not to move without orders from them. The engineer obeyed. The train was then surrounded by at least a hundred men. Three men with weapons drawn entered the coach where the officers and prisoners were, and at the point of the bayonet took Bob Sarver from the custody of the Sheriff. Not a word was said, but they immediately proceeded to the place where the outrage was attempted, some eight miles north of Franklin. His hands and feet were tied, a rope placed around his neck, a convenient limb took the place of a scaffold, and Bob Sarver was launched into eternity.
