Officials Investigate Hanging of Primus Kirby Near Guthrie— Negro Shoots World Veteran in Stomach— Taken From Officers By Mob Following His Arrest

Elkton, Ky., June 15– Todd county officials tonight were investigating the lynching early today of Primus Kirby, 26, negro, on the Guthrie road. Quiet prevailed here tonight.

Coroner MacBell, who conducted a brief inquest, said the identity of none of the members of the mob was disclosed. Judge S.P. Slaughter said the county grand jury, which convened the second Monday in July, would investigate the case.

Kirby was taken from county officers near Guthrie today, after he had shot and seriously wounded Ed Bringhurst, a railroad employe [sic] who had been deputized to arrest in arrasting [sic] the nergo [sic]. The mob, variously estimated between 15 and 250, hanged the negro and fired several shots into his body. Kirby was being sought for slaying his former wife at Earlington, Ky., Monday.

Bringhurst, who was wounded in the stomach, was taken to a Clarksville, Tenn., hospital, where it was said tonight he had an even chance to recover. His ife [sic], a French war bride, and their four year old son, were scheduled to sail for America tomorrow from France, where they had been visiting her relatives.

L.L. Weakly, one of the officers from whom the negro was taken, was the only witness at the inquest. He said the men were masked and that he did not recognize any of them.
</text>

Shortly after 12 o’clock Thursday morning, Fratus Warfield, a negro, 23 years of age, was taken from the county jail by a mob and hanged at Elkton, Ky. Tuesday the negro went to the home of a young white farmer, about three miles from Elkton, and finding no one at home but the wife and her little babe, attempted to frighten her into letting him into the house. He did not succeed in getting in, and after trying to break in the door and threatening to kill her, he went away.

Warfield was captured Wednesday and placed in jail. During the night a mob of about 150 men overpowered the jailor and getting the keys quietly took the prisoner to a grove near town, where he was found hanging to a limb in the morning.
</text>

Elkton Ky. Oct. 18, - Last night at midnight the negro Fratus Warfield, who attempted to outrage Mrs Len Penick, the wife of a prominent farmer near this city Tuesday, was taken from the jail by a mob and hanged.

Every thing was so quiet that very few expected him to be lynched. About midnight a a mob very quietly formed and appeared at the county jail and demanded Warfield. After some parleying Jailer Grumb was induced to open the door.

After securing the prisoner the mob went out Clarksville street about a mile and swung him up to a limb.

Very few of the citizens knew what had happened untill this morning.

A big crowd of of sightseers was on the ground when Coroner Bruce arrived. A jury was at once impaneled, and the usual verdict was returned, that the deceased came to his death at the hands of an unknown party or parties by hanging.
</text>
