P’Pool was seriously injured in the blast, as was 13-year-old Harold Nabb, playing nearby. Revenge Was Motive Authorities charged Merrick and P’Pool had quarreled and the dynamiting was in revenge. Six automobiles carried the men to the lynching. They gathered on the outskirts of the city and at midnight their leader rang the jail door bell. As Night Jailer Curtis Jones opened the door, he faced a dozen revolvers. The leader said: “We want Merrick.” Without another word the mob pressed on into the jail office. Three men remained with Jones, tying him hand and foot and taking his keys. The others went to Merrick’s cell. The prisoner was awakened. The mob leader said: “Let’s go.” Merrick said: “What’s this all about?” Then he apparently realized his fate, and acquiesced with only a mild protest. Speeded Out of Town He was half dragged, half carried to one of the automobiles and speeded out of town. It was a half hour before Jailer Jones broke his bonds and telephoned Sheriff Press Blackburn, who with deputies hunted in vain for the mob. Shortly after dawn Paul Grant, a youth, traveling along the road, came upon Merrick’s body hanging from a tree. Officers cut down the body and brought it here. P’Pool was widely known in western Kentucky where he was a bank director and a school trustee in addition to owning a store. PENALTY WAS SWIFT. Before The Day Was Over He Was Hanged By a Mob.</h3> A negro named Wallce Miller was hanged by a mob near Mt. Tabor church, on teh road from Cadiz to Caledonia, Monday evening about nightfall. An indecent proposal made to the little nine-year-old daughter of Thomas Wadlington, near Caledonia, was the crime that brought speedy death to him. Miller was a mulatto about 20 years of age and lived near Cadiz. About 11:30 A.M. Monday the little girl was sent to the mail box at the road, 400 yards from the house, to get the mail. Miller was at the gate and accosted her and asked her if her father was at home. The little girl told him he was not. Then he asked if her brothers were and she told him they were in the field at work. Then came the proposition that terrified the little girl and as she started away in fear the brute called to her that he would give her some money if she would say nothing about what he had said. She continued to move away and replied that she would tell it when she got to the house. At this point Miller started toward her and she ran inside the gate, slammed it shut and ran as fast as she could to the house, where she told what had happened. Wayne and Monte Wadlington the child’s brothers, were soon on the trail and came up with Miller a mile and a half down the road. He denied his identity, but from the description they knew they had the right man and he was taken back to the Wadlington house where the little girl identified him and he finally confessed, saying he didn’t know why he did, that is was just “the negro in him.” About 4 o’clock the Wadlington boys and Milton Barber started to Cadiz with Miller. They returned after night and reported that they were met by a mob of 50 men at the church half way to Cadiz and Miller was taken from them and hanged to a tree. The body was left hanging by the roadside until Tuesday evening and the authorities were notified where it could be found. This is the fourth occurrence of this kind within a radius of ten miles within the last eight or nine months. Last winter a white woman was assaulted by a negro named Arthurt Wilson, near Pee Dee, who is now under a sentence of death. Last Spring, a young girl was insulted by a negro named Ben Brame in Trigg county who was brought across the county line and hanged by a mob in this county. About two weeks ago a negro man named McReynolds outraged a negro child 7 years old near Gracey, the victim dying a few days later. McReynolds is now in jail here. This case comes as the fourth crime against women and children and the promptness with which Miller was put to death shows that there is to be trifling with rapists in that section. Proceeding a short distance out of London on the Barbourville road the negro was strung to an apple tree. So quietly was the work done that few knew of the deed outside the members of the mob until daylight, when the dead body of Bowers was discovered by a hotel porter. The lynching, the first that has occurred in that county for over forty years, has created great excitement. Last Monday large crowds from the surrounding country flocked into London. Monday evening a mass meeting was held, participated in by a large number of representative citizens, condemning the summary proceedings of the mob. Efforts will be made to apprehend the members of the lynching party, it is said. The murder of Farris, who was a wealthy lumberman of Grays, this county, occurred at the London fair, and for a time there was talk of mobbing Bowers. Bell Times Staff Writer PRINCETON, KY., July 19.--On the night of May 31, mob law broke out in Caldwell county. A man awaiting legal trial was taken from jail and condemned to death by a mob, which hanged him to a tree after beating him.  In the seven weeks since no one has been arrested.  “I have nothing to say about the lynching,” said Sheriff P. J. Blackburn. “The sheriff’s office is not an information bureau. Whatever I have to say on matters pertaining to my office will be said in the court and in the courts only.”  County Attorney John O. Hardin also is silent as to any efforts to arrest the mob members. He says he has not talked to any members of the family of the man murdered by the mob since the lynching concerning plans to apprehend the lynchers or on any other subject.  The victim was Walter Merrick, 42, owner of a farm on which he lived near Hopson, ten miles south of Princeton.  Two Are Badly Hurt He was awaiting trial on an indictment charging him with bombing the store of Millard P’Pool, Hopson merchant, Feb. 3. P’Pool, in the store, and Harold Nabb, 13, standing on the front porch were hurt badly. The boy has recovered but P’Pool still is using crutches.  Merrick was arrested on suspicion based largely on enmity between him and P’Pool. He was arrested at his home a few hours after the explosion. It was said that anger over a disputed $1.70 grocery bill had been fanned by a whipping Merrick’s son received in school. P’Pool is prominent in politics and business in Caldwell county. His unusual name is a shortening of the original family name of Petilpool.  One Dog Was Used It was reported officially that “bloodhounds” had led deputies from the ruins of P’Pool’s store to Merrick’s home. Later grand jury inquiry brought out it was one police dog.  Public opinion divided sharply as to this evidence. Reports were current that P’Pool had incurred the enmity of moonshiners or bootleggers.  Governor Ruby Laffoon, for the commonwealth, offered $200 reward in the bombing case.  But it was more than a month after the lynching that Laffoon offered a $200 award for convicting evidence against the lynchers. This was on condition, which was met, that Caldwell County offer a like sum.  Can’t Find Evidence The American Civil Liberties Union widely announced $500 reward for information leading to arrest of any participant, charging that the names of men in the mob “are well known to many in the community,” A grand jury, questioning persons near the scene reported it “was unable to find evidence of any nature showing any person that was in the mob or had anything to do with it.”  In instructing this grand jury, Circuit Judge Charles W. Wilson of Smithland said, “Mob violence is violation of the law and the court calls attention to that, and it is your duty to investigate and if you have evidence of the guilty parties it is your duty to indict.”  “It is a serious thing, but no more serious than violation of any other law.”  “I only talked to the sheriff a little while over the telephone on the night the mob hanged Walter.” Mrs. Mattle Merrick, 34, widow, said.  Klu-Klux Terrors Feared “‘They hung Walter’, he told me, and then asked what I wanted to do with the body. I told them to bring it home. He never said anything to me about arresting the persons who did it, nor communicated with me in any way.  “I have never been to see the sheriff because I don’t feel that it would do any good.”  Feeling is running high here and throughout Caldwell county over the lynching. There is some fear that the terrors of the old night riders and the more recent Klu-Klux Klan which had 1,000 members in Caldwell county, again are imminent. W. J. Miller, attorney, who fought the Klan here at the height of its power, places the present Klan strength here at “an active 150 men.” That the lynching of Merrick was well organized is indicated by the fact that almost four months elapsed between the bombing and the lynching. Excitement over the bombing had subsided.  Witnesses said the “mob” was composed of about twenty men who took Merrick from jail just before midnight, working silently and quickly. P’Poole was seriously injured and was in a hospital at Nashville two months. A boy near the building suffered a broken arm because of the blast. Intense feeling over the explosion caused a fear of mob violence after Merrick was arrested in February, but it was believed to have subsided. The lynching was a complete surprise. Six automobiles in procession moved into Princeton late in the night, stopped at the jail and a few minutes later were speeding toward Hopson. Merrick, according to his fellow-prisoners, said nothing when taken. Half an hour after the departure, from the jail Jones succeeded in arousing other members of his family, who released him, and he then notified officers. The P’Poole explosion, authorities charged, was set off by Merrick as a result of his son being whipped by a school teacher. Merrick carried the case to court, where P’Poole, as chairman of the county school board, sided with the teacher. CLAY KING’S TRIAL.</div> Lebanon, Ky., May 31.--(Special)--Wick Willis, a negro brute, was taken from the jail here last night shortly after midnight and lynched just outside of Campbellsville by an Adair county mob. Last week Willis met Miss Ella Dice, who belongs to one of the best families of Adair county, on the highway, seven miles from Columbia, and tried to outrage her, and was only prevented by two or three men, who were attracted by the young woman’s screams. She became unconscious, and has only recovered consciousness at intervals since. Willis was tried at Columbia last week, and placed in jail here last Friday to prevent a threatened lynching. At 12:15 o’clock last night six men knocked on the jail door and aroused Jailer Clark. They told him that Policeman Brown had a prisoner whom he wanted to place in jail until morning. As Mr. Clark opened the door three men instantly grabbed him by both arms and the back of his neck. Five men then presented their pistols and told him to surrender the key, or they would kill him. The bjailer [sic] asked them to release their hold and not ask him to unlock the door. His request was promptly refused, and he was forced to unlock the doors leading to the cells. Before going into the cells they placed two men to guard Mr. Clark, while three of the men entered and struck matches, which enabled them to recognize Wick Willis among the other prisoners. They then pinioned his arms behind him. He was in his night clothing and they took him from jail without giving him time to dress. The mob quietly left the town with their prisoner, going in the direction of Campbellsville. This morning Willis’ dead body was found hanging to a tree just outside of Campbellsville. The intention of the mob was to hang him at Columbia, but daylight coming on them, they were forced to hang him just where they did. The negro’s forehead bears a deep wound, caused by a blunt instrument. It is thought the wound was received while trying to make his escape.
