The lynchers went about the work in a quiet way, and the people of this vicinity were so reticent on the subject that nothing was known here of the affair until noon to-day. Rockfield is a little station on the L. and N., ten miles from this city. It is said that the negro, a son of a section hand at Rockfield, yesterday wrote an insulting and insinnating [sic] note to Miss Tommie Johnson, a well known white woman of Rockfield. When this became known a posse started to arrest him, he ran, and the officers gave chase, capturing him only after threatening him several times. After his arrest, he was taken to a house on the Russellville pike, not far from town, and put under guard until he could be brought here and lodged in jail. About 12 o’clock a party of men appeared at the house, overpowered the guards, and took the prisoner away from them. They then proceeded with him about three miles from Rockfield, and hanged him and quietly dispersed, going to their homes.  NOT LYNCHED BOWLING GREEN, KY., Feb. 8.—Robert Morton, the negro boy who was taken from his home near Rockfield, ten miles south of Bowling Green, Thursday night by a mob, has not yet been found. It is claimed by the people of this city that the negro was not lynched, but only severely whipped. Morton’s offense consisted in sending an offensive letter to Miss Timmie Johnson, of Rockfield. Her friends heard of this and several young men went to the home the negro, took him to the woods and gave him one hundred lashed on his back. In the evening two drunken negroes, Nelson Cooper and Sam Bailey, fiendishly shot and killed Dick Winlock, an inoffensive white man, on the Nashville pike about a mile from the town. They were arrested placed in jail, and hung by a mob that night, the particulars of which the Russellville correspondent to the Courier-Journal gives as follows: The murderers of Dick Winlock were taken from jail last night by a band of masked men and hanged in a grove hard by. As detailed in your special from here yesterday, Winlock, a poor harmless, inoffensive creature, was brutally shot to death Wednesday evening, on the Nashville turnpike, about one mile south of Russellville, by Nelson Cooper and Sam Bailey, two colored men. The killing was absolutely inhuman and fiendish, not only unprovoked, but altogether unintelligible, except upon the hypothesis that his slayers were thirsty for human blood and availed themselves to his accidental approach to appease their infernal appetite. There was no quarrel, no difficulty. Winlock was returning home from a circus, walking and very much intoxicated, and was overtaken on the highway by Cooper, who was driving a wagon and Bailey, who was on horseback. These two negroes were together, and accosted Winlock with the inquiry as to whether he was a Democrat or Republican, to which he replied it made no difference: that he was in United the States army whereupon Cooper alighted from wagon and Bailey dismounted, and both commenced denouncing and assaulting their victim, Cooper shooting him through the heart, causing instantaneous death. The murder was witnessed and the talking beard by several reputable gentlemen, as the road was full of vehicles and pedestrians returning from the circus. When arrested in his bed that night by the Sheriff, Cooper insolently inquired why he as taken, and when told by the officer, he said with great sangfroid, “Well, I did shoot the d—s— of a b—, but didn’t know whether I killed him or not; hope I did.” These and other aggravating facts were developed at the Coroner's inquest yesterday morning. And no sooner had the prisoners been confined to the jail than the ominous whisperings of groups of men gathered on the streets gave earnest of last night’s tragedy. The storm was brewing all day, and even the casual observer could divine the desperate purpose of men who having grown weary and heartsick at the law’s delays and the almost total immunity from punishment of the law-breaking classes in this county, resolved to teach the ministers of the law a much-needed lesson in criminal jurisprudence. It was very generally reported on the streets that the jail would be captured and these men, and perhaps others, hanged last night, but the Jailer informed me this morning that he was taken completely unawares. About midnight a body of about sixty men, heavily armed and thoroughly disguised, surrounded the jail, and ten or a dozen of the coolest approached the door and aroused Mr. J. G. Meadow, the Jailer, by telling him that the Sheriff and a policeman wanted to deliver a prisoner to him. Not recognizing the voices, he declined to open the outer door, a heavy wooden one, when without further parley the men seized a heavy log of wood near by and in a twinkling battered the door down, rushed in, presented pistols at the Jailer’s head, forcibly took the keys, and while four of them pinioned him the others unlocked the door to the cell department, hunted out the affrighted negroes and hurriedly relocked the jail, gave the keys back to its dumbfounded custodian, and took the doomed culprits to the large lawn fronting Capt. J.B. Briggs’ residence and hung them to trees. The mob was orderly and quiet. Almost stealthy in it’s methods. There was no noise, no confusion, no demonstrations of any kind. Although the night was brilliant with moonlight and the skies were cloudless, no one seems to have seen or heard the masqueraders. They did their work silently, rapidly, and well, and immediately dispersed for their homes. Whence they came, whither they went, who they were, will probably remain a mystery, for all time. Hicks paid the penalty of death last night for burning the dwelling-house and barn of Jas. Wheeler, in this county, several weeks ago. About two weeks since Taylor was suspected of knowing something concerning the awful deed, and, in order to induce him to freely unbosom himself, he was waited upon by a party of indignant citizens, a rope placed around his neck, and made to talk. He related every little circumstance connected with the burnings, and made it so clear that even the most incredulous admitted that he and Hicks were guilty. He was then placed in jail with his pal, Wes. Hicks, to await the final trail at the next term of the Circuit Court. It recently reached the ears of some of the citizens in Wheeler’s vicinity that Taylor intended denying all that he had previously stated when he was again placed on the witness stand. This of course, enraged the citizens, hence the mob. The masked men quietly rode into town about 12 o’clock last night, and halted at the jail, demanded of Jailor Blewett that he open the cell-doors of the two men. Blewett refused, but was promptly covered with a number of revolvers and made to unlock the jail. Several men entered and ordered Hicks’ hands tied behind him, adding that should he resist in the least he should be shot down on the spot. Hicks prayed, and at first protested his innocence, but before leaving the jail acknowledged that he had burned the barn. Taylor stepped out with a smile on his face, but did not utter a word. He was perfectly cool and made no complaint. The mob left town quietly, going in the direction of the Tennessee line. This morning the two incendiaries were found swinging to different limbs, about two hundred yards across the Kentucky line, near Mitchellville Station, Tenn. The limb on which Taylor was swinging was so low that his feet would have touched the ground had they not been tied with a bridle-rein. Great excitement prevails here, and hundreds of people are leaving town to visit the scene. Simpson county has needed a first-class hanging for some time, but our good citizens regret that it was not done by the due process of law. Hicks and Taylor were bad men, and doubtless deserved the severe penalty. ATTEMPTED ASSAULT CHARGED Taylorsville, Ky., July. 8. – Lon Beard, a young negro, charged with an attempt to criminally assault Mrs. Chester Crawford, of the Normandy neighborhood, was shot to death yesterday afternoon while being taken to Shelbyville on a train for safekeeping. He had been in the jail here and fearful of a mob it was decided to take him away. When the train made its regular stop at Normandy station, about 25 men got aboard. The negro with the officer, was in the smoking car and before the trainmen or the officer knew what was happening, there was a thunder of firearms and the negro was dead, riddled with bullets and buckshot. It is generally accepted that he was killed by Chester Crawdord, husband of the negro’s intended victim.  The negro went to Mrs. Crawford’s home at 11 o’clock Thursday night and forced an entrance through a window. She was alone in her home with the exception of several children and was awakened by the negro springing upon her in bed. She resisted as best she could, and called the oldest child, aged eight, to summon help. The child ran to go out the front door when the negro left his victim and attempted to stop the child. Mrs Crawford then escaped by a back door and cried for help. Neighbors soon arrived, but not before the negro made his escape. Mrs. Crawford was bruised, but escaped serious injury. The negro was captured on his farm and held until the arrival of officers. When questioned the negro would neither affirm nor deny his guilt. Crawford is said to have stepped aboard and fired seven bullets into the negro’s body.
