Description

POSSUM HUNTERS TO BE TRIED

Muhlenberg Circuit Court Is In Session At Greenville.

Greenville, Ky., Jan. 11. – The regular January term of the Muhlenberg Circuit Court convened here to-dau with Judge John S. Rhea on the bench.

The criminal docket was gone into and probably will occupy the most of the week. A number of indictments for banding and confederating together for the purposes of intimidation are to be tried, which were found as a result of the alleged “Possum Hunter” outrages, and it is expected that a great number of others will be returned.

In charging the grand jury Judge Rhea said that it was to be regretted that since the last term of court a cowardly and unprovoked murder had been committed when Henry Allen had been taken from his home and hanged. He remarked, however, that that crime was but the inevitable result of the condition of affairs which had preceded it and although that was true it was still a crime and should be vigorously prosecuted.

He then remarked that Muhlenberg county though rich in mineral wealth, was seriously retarded in its development by conditions now existing. He called on the people through the grandy jury to assist the court in bringing order and peace and promised the grand jury that if indictments were returned into court speedy trials should be had and justice meted out. He also mentioned the most prolific source of crime as the illegal sale of liquor and the carrying of deadly weapons concealed and asked the grand jury to pay especial attention to them.

The grand jury as impaneled is as follows: J. S. Depoyster, foreman; S. G. Mitchell, Oscar Craig, G. W. Harbin, J. J. Padgett, C. G. Newman, H. A. Wallace, R. A. Dennis, S. B. Allen, J. R. DeCoursey, H. G. Wiggins and J. H. Kimmell.
