Frankfort, Ky., Nov. 16. - A reward of $200 was offered by Governor James B. McCreary for the apprehension and conviction of “possum hunters” who have been terrorizing four western Kentucky counties during the past few weeks. County Judge J. J. Rice and County Attorney W. H. Gray, of Muhlenberg county, called on the governor and urged the action. An additional reward of $200 is offered by the county.
The county officials decided on the step following the lynching of Henry Allen, at Hillside, Ky., Thursday night. Sheriff Robert Wickliffe and deputies have armed themselves with shotguns and mean to engage the “regulators” if they show up in Muhlenberg county again.
Gov. McCreary said he received his first official notice of the outrages in the coal fields on Saturday. He was not requested to order out troops, but expressed his willingness to meet the emergency with the whole state militia if the step is deemed necessary. The governor said that he had been informed by Judge Rice that conditions as reported had in no wise been exaggerated.
W. H. Kingstonm of Morton’s Gap, Saturday wired the governor that “possum hunters” had threatened him with death unless he immediately placed more men at work in his mines. The warning also stayed that the mines would be destroyed.Source
