CINCINNATI, July 12 – Police announced today they were holding John Baker, 42, a Tyner Ky., groceryman, for questioning in connection with the slaying in Manchester, Ky., last March of Police Judge C. P. Stivers.

While Baker was ordered held pending word from the sheriff of Clay county, D. Y. Lyttle, an attorney formerly from there and brother of the Clay county judge, said Baker was not connected with the slaying, Police said Baker had $8,923 in cash and $30,000 in stocks and bonds and a pistol. He explained he recently retired from the grocery business and came here on a business trip.

Four men were indicted in the Stivers slaying and one of them, Frank McDaniel, 24, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.
