MANCHESTER, KY., August 19 – (CNS Hugh Hornsby, white is on trial for his life in connection with the fatal shooting of Alfred Neal colored. According to prosecution witnessed, all white, Hornsby and a group o ffive white men attacked Neal on the Main street of the twon and shot him at leat seven or eight times, then walked away.

Hornsby, however, denies this and says he was walking down the street and saw a group of men unknown to him come out from behind a tree and shoot Neal five or six times. He claims that he did not know the man was Neal. Two other white men are indicted with hi,. They are George Baker and Wiley Baker.

Hornsby was positively identified as a member of the murder gang by several witnesses. One of the witnesses at former hearing has since been shot, almost on the very spot where Neal met his death. The man was Police C. P. Stivers. Several persons have been indicted for his murder.

Alleged threats against the lives of other witnesses and defendants resulted in the trail judge’s request for protection by the Kentucky National Guard which is now on guard at the court house as the trial proceeds.
